Thomas Roe at the Mughal Court
Sir Thomas Roe served as King James I's ambassador to Jahangir's court from 1615 to 1619. The East India Company already had a trading foothold at Surat; Roe's embassy sought broader and more durable Mughal protection for English commerce and helped secure permission for factories in additional parts of the empire.
