First Census of India
Between 1867 and 1872, colonial administrations carried out the first broad census exercise across much of British India. Known as the Census of 1872, it was non-synchronous, was not centrally conducted as a single operation and did not cover every territory. The first synchronous all-India census followed in 1881.
