Ilbert Bill Controversy
In 1883, Law Member Courtenay Ilbert introduced a bill under Viceroy Lord Ripon to remove racial restrictions that prevented senior Indian judges and magistrates in the mofussil from trying European British subjects. Fierce opposition from much of the European community forced a compromise, and the controversy became an important episode in the growth of organised Indian political opinion.
