Partition of Bengal
The colonial government under Lord Curzon partitioned the Bengal Presidency in 1905, creating the new province of Eastern Bengal and Assam while reorganising western Bengal. Officials defended the measure as administrative reform; Indian nationalists widely interpreted it as an attempt to weaken Bengal's growing political movement by dividing its population and political networks.
