Transfer of the Imperial Capital to Delhi Is Announced
At the Delhi Durbar of 1911, King George V announced that the capital of British India would be transferred from Calcutta to Delhi. The government moved to Delhi in 1912, while the purpose-built imperial city of New Delhi was developed over the following two decades and formally inaugurated in 1931. The 1905 partition of Bengal was also annulled and the eastern provinces were reorganised.
