Chauri Chaura Incident
On 4 February 1922, a Non-Cooperation protest at Chauri Chaura turned violent after a confrontation with police. Protesters set fire to the police station, killing 22 policemen. Gandhi, who regarded the violence as incompatible with satyagraha, moved to suspend the Non-Cooperation campaign soon afterward.
