Naxalbari Uprising
In 1967, a radical peasant uprising around Naxalbari in West Bengal's Darjeeling district challenged local landholding relations and state authority. Communist organisers including Kanu Sanyal, Jangal Santhal and Charu Mazumdar became associated with the movement, whose name later gave rise to the wider 'Naxalite' current of revolutionary left politics and armed insurgency in India.
