Launch of Operation Flood
The National Dairy Development Board launched Operation Flood in 1970, building on the cooperative model associated with Verghese Kurien. Implemented in three phases, the programme linked village dairy cooperatives to an expanding National Milk Grid, sought to raise producer incomes and stabilise milk supplies and prices, and became central to India's later growth into the world's largest milk producer.
