Assassination of Indira Gandhi and Anti-Sikh Violence
Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated in New Delhi on 31 October 1984 by two Sikh members of her security detail, Beant Singh and Satwant Singh. Rajiv Gandhi was sworn in as Prime Minister the same day. In the days that followed, large-scale anti-Sikh violence in Delhi and other cities killed thousands and displaced many more; later commissions investigated failures of policing and allegations of organised participation.
