IPKF Deployed in Sri Lanka

Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Sri Lankan President J. R. Jayewardene signed the Indo-Sri Lanka Accord on 29 July 1987 as an attempt to address Sri Lanka's ethnic conflict. India then deployed the Indian Peace Keeping Force to help oversee the ceasefire and the surrender of militant weapons. The arrangement broke down, and the IPKF subsequently fought a prolonged and costly conflict with the LTTE before its withdrawal was completed in 1990.
