NPCI launched the pilot of the Unified Payments Interface on 11 April 2016 with 21 member banks, under the regulatory oversight of the Reserve Bank of India and led at the launch by RBI Governor Raghuram G. Rajan. UPI-enabled bank apps became publicly available later that year.
