TVK Forms Tamil Nadu’s First Non-DMK/AIADMK Government Since 1967

In the May 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) won 108 of 234 seats, becoming the largest party but falling short of a majority. After securing support from Congress and several smaller parties, TVK founder C. Joseph Vijay was sworn in as Chief Minister on 10 May. His government was the first in Tamil Nadu since 1967 to be headed by a party other than the DMK or AIADMK.
