Lok Sabha Rejects Resolution Seeking Removal of Speaker Om Birla

On 11 March 2026, the Lok Sabha rejected by voice vote an opposition resolution seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla after a two-day debate. Congress MP Mohammad Jawed had moved the resolution, with opposition parties accusing the Speaker of partisan conduct; government and ruling-alliance members defended his record and rejected the allegations. The debate was historically unusual: parliamentary records and contemporary official reporting noted that such a removal motion had reached debate only rarely in independent India and not for nearly four decades. Its defeat kept Birla in office but marked a significant constitutional and parliamentary confrontation over the neutrality and authority of the Speaker.
