Rise of the Sikh Empire
In 1799, Ranjit Singh captured Lahore and strengthened his authority among the Sikh misls. He was proclaimed Maharaja in 1801 and over the following decades built a powerful state across much of the Punjab, combining Sikh political leadership with a religiously diverse administration and army.
