Annexation of Awadh
In 1856, the East India Company annexed Awadh after Governor-General Lord Dalhousie declared its government to be mismanaged, deposing Nawab Wajid Ali Shah. The annexation disrupted the court, landed interests and soldiers closely connected to Awadh and became one important source of resentment before the uprising of 1857.
