The Revolt of 1857
In May 1857, a mutiny among East India Company sepoys at Meerut spread into a much wider rebellion across large parts of northern and central India. Rebel groups rallied around different rulers, military leaders, landed elites and local grievances; Bahadur Shah Zafar became its most prominent symbolic sovereign. Company forces and British reinforcements suppressed the uprising by 1858–59.
