Indian Penal Code (IPC) Enacted
The Indian Penal Code was enacted in 1860 after a long codification process that began with a draft prepared by the First Law Commission under Thomas Babington Macaulay in 1837. The Code became the principal criminal code of British India and came into operation in 1862.
