Archaeological Survey of India Established
The Archaeological Survey of India traces its institutional origin to 1861, when Alexander Cunningham was appointed Archaeological Surveyor under a scheme sanctioned by Lord Canning. The early Survey focused on systematic documentation and investigation of ancient sites and monuments; it was later reorganised into a permanent archaeological department.
