Age of Consent Act Passed
The Indian Criminal Law Amendment Act of 1891 raised the age below which sexual intercourse with a girl constituted rape from ten to twelve years, whether or not she was married. Reformers including Behramji Malabari supported the change, while opponents including Bal Gangadhar Tilak objected to colonial intervention in domestic and religious custom.
