Surat Split of the Congress
The 1907 Congress session at Surat collapsed amid conflict between the Moderate leadership and the Nationalist or 'Extremist' wing associated with Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Lala Lajpat Rai and Bipin Chandra Pal. The rupture excluded the Nationalist faction from effective control of the Congress for several years.
