Bengal Famine
A catastrophic famine struck Bengal in 1943, killing millions through starvation and famine-related disease. The crisis developed from a combination of wartime disruption, the loss of Burmese rice imports, crop and cyclone damage, severe price inflation, failures of distribution and procurement, and policy decisions by the Bengal and Government of India authorities. Responsibility and the relative weight of these causes remain subjects of historical debate.
