Direct Action Day
After the Muslim League resolved to pursue 'Direct Action' in support of its Pakistan demand, 16 August 1946 was observed as Direct Action Day. In Calcutta, mass political mobilisation was followed by several days of devastating Hindu-Muslim communal violence known as the Great Calcutta Killing, in which thousands died. The violence deepened the political and communal crisis preceding Partition but should not be described as making Partition automatically inevitable.
