Indus Waters Treaty
On 19 September 1960, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistan President Mohammad Ayub Khan signed the Indus Waters Treaty at Karachi after years of World Bank-assisted negotiations. The treaty allocated the eastern rivers — Ravi, Beas and Sutlej — principally to India and the western rivers — Indus, Jhelum and Chenab — principally to Pakistan while preserving specified uses and creating a permanent cooperation mechanism.
