Asylum for the Dalai Lama
The 14th Dalai Lama fled Lhasa during the Tibetan uprising and crossed into Indian territory on 31 March 1959. The Nehru government granted his request for asylum. His party travelled through Tawang and Bomdila to Tezpur before he later took up residence at Mussoorie. The episode became one of several developments that strained India–China relations.
