India and the European Union Conclude Landmark Free Trade Agreement Negotiations
On 27 January 2026, India and the European Union announced the conclusion of negotiations on a wide-ranging Free Trade Agreement after years of intermittent talks and renewed negotiations since 2022. The European Commission described it as the largest trade agreement either side had concluded, covering a combined market of roughly two billion people. The negotiated text included commitments on goods, services, investment-related rules, trade facilitation and regulatory cooperation. The announcement did not itself bring the agreement into force: the texts remained subject to legal revision, signature and completion of each side’s internal procedures before becoming legally binding.
