Maratha Military Landscapes Are Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List

On 11 July 2025, the World Heritage Committee inscribed the Maratha Military Landscapes of India on UNESCO's World Heritage List, making them India's 44th World Heritage property. The serial property brings together twelve forts across Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, from hill strongholds such as Raigad and Shivneri to coastal and island defences. The inscription recognised a military landscape designed and adapted across varied terrain between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. The date refers to the committee's inscription decision, not the construction of the forts.
