Provincial Elections
Provincial elections were held in 1937 under the Government of India Act 1935. The Indian National Congress emerged as the largest political force and, after initial negotiations over the governors' reserve powers, formed ministries in a majority of the provinces where it was able to command legislative support. The elections also revealed the uneven provincial strength of the Muslim League and other regional parties.
