Constitution Comes into Force and India Becomes a Republic
On 26 January 1950, the Constitution of India came into force and India became a sovereign democratic republic. Rajendra Prasad took office as the first President. B. R. Ambedkar had chaired the Constituent Assembly's Drafting Committee, but the Constitution was the product of the wider Assembly and its committees. The words 'Socialist' and 'Secular' were added to the Preamble only in 1976.
