First Indo-Pakistani War

Fighting began in the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir in October 1947 after an invasion by tribal forces from Pakistan's North-West Frontier, supported by Pakistani personnel. Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession to India on 26 October, after which Indian forces were deployed. The conflict continued through 1948 and ended with a UN-backed ceasefire effective 1 January 1949; the subsequent Karachi Agreement delineated a cease-fire line, not yet the later Line of Control.
