Assassination of Mahatma Gandhi
On 30 January 1948, Nathuram Godse shot Mahatma Gandhi as Gandhi walked to his evening prayer meeting at Birla House in New Delhi. Gandhi died at the scene. His assassination came amid the communal and political tensions that followed Partition.
