Nirbhaya Protests
The gang rape and fatal assault of a 23-year-old woman in Delhi on 16 December 2012 triggered large public protests demanding stronger protections against sexual violence and greater accountability. The government constituted the Justice J. S. Verma Committee to recommend legal reform, and Parliament subsequently enacted the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013.
